LEGACY.
The word carries weight, especially in the South. It can mean poverty, injustice, and the struggles passed down through generations. But it can also mean brilliance, creativity, and resilience. Mississippi’s legacy includes Richard Wright, Eudora Welty, William Faulkner, and Margaret Walker, artists who paved the way for Natasha Trethewey, Jesmyn Ward, and Donna Tartt. Robert Johnson’s blues helped shape American music. And in Gluckstadt, Germantown High School carries forward its own legacy through song.
Legacy began as a small group brought together by a shared love of music. That love remains. Rooted in the past, grounded in the present, and looking to the future, Legacy continues to grow.
This year’s concert theme, All Who Wander, reflects the journey each student takes. Whether through academics, athletics, service, or art, their paths lead to the same place: home, together in music.
Legacy’s members are diverse in every sense. They are student leaders, athletes, artists, and scholars, connected by their commitment to something bigger than themselves. What unites them is harmony: not just in music, but in community.
Music is the perfect metaphor for Legacy. Many voices, one sound. Many stories, one song. These students support one another beyond rehearsal and understand that beauty is made together.
They wander through doubt and change, but always return to music. As Faulkner said, artists are the props and pillars that help us endure. Music is not needed to survive, but to truly live. Each class knows this, and passes it on, to the next singer, the next generation.
It is their legacy.
And for all who wander, it is always the way home.
